At the annual convention of TxHIMA (Texas Health Information Management Association) in Galveston in June, Sue Biedermann, Program Chair was installed President-elect of the 4,300+ member state professional association. She will progress to President effective July, 1 2007. During her term in office, she will also serve as a delegate to the AHIMA House of Delegates in Denver in October 2006 and Philadelphia October 2007.
Also, at the TxHIMA annual convention Linda Walker, May 2006 graduate, received the TxHIMA Outstanding Student award and Christine Pencak, Senior, received the annual TxHIMA scholarship. Both were present to accept their awards. Desla Mancilla, Assistant Professor made a presentation “Living a Virtual Life” to the group as well.
In other faculty news: Danette Myers, MBA, RHIA joined the faculty fall 2006 as a full-time faculty. Desla Mancilla presented at the Annual Assembly on Education of AHIMA in Nashville in June. The topic of her presentation was related to the use of technology to support more of a “live” environment in web-based instruction. Lillian Polanco-Valdez is currently President-elect of the Alamo Area HIMA in San Antonio.
Other Program News: 45 new students were admitted to the program fall 2006, the largest ever new class to start the program. This number includes the 25 students who started in the traditional on-campus program and the 21 starting the web-based program. There are about 40 returning students continuing the program also. With the 25 students who graduated in May and August 2006, the number graduating from the HIM Program since the program started in 1976 is now 604!! Beginning Fall 2006, the program has access to a virtual lab for use in HIM courses throughout the HIM curriculum. The virtual lab allows Internet access to a prototype electronic health record environment. The site will be used for projects and assignments and allows the students access to patient records and the health record electronic environment currently in use in many hospitals and healthcare facilities.
