News from Radiation Therapy

The Radiation Therapy Program accepted a full class for this year. We had a few drop during the first week of the semester, but ended up with 15 using our alternates.

The faculty are pleased with our new classroom. Our appreciation is expressed to the College’s Facilities Committee and the Dean for their planning.

Related to our classroom, our appreciation goes out to our medical advisor, Dr. David Jones. The program funded the majority of the instructional technology using support from the Education and Development Foundation of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. This is a professional organization for the physicians of radiation oncology. Dr. Jones has taken advantage of a matching program designed to match contributions from individual members in the effort to support educational programs for radiation therapy.

We are joined again this semester by Ms. Margaret Kendrick, Oncology Certified Nurse who works in Austin’s Seton Hospital and St. David’s as a case manager. She also works at the Texas NeuroRehab Center as a charge nurse. The center provides treatment programs for children, adolescents and adults who have a history of difficult neurological and/or behavioral issues. Margaret has supported our program for 7 straight years now as our instructor for Patient Care course.

We are also joined for the firs time by Mr. Rex Boykin to teach our Radiation Therapy Physics courses. Rex is earning his PhD at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Medical Physics. He is currently involved in a research project for new methods of therapy for hepatocellular carcinomas. He has previous teaching experience at the University of Missouri Kansas City.

Student Focus: The Senior students look forward to participating in the RT Image National Writing Competition to maintain our program’s top placements as the top 3 award recipients this Fall.

The Junior class is working hard in preparation for this year’s Cancer Awareness Day, being held on Thursday November 30 at the LBJ Student Center.
