Frequently Asked Questions

  • Once you apply for graduation, our advising staff will review your application within a couple weeks and notify you via your Texas State email of your application status.

Your application status will indicate if you are on track to graduate or if you are missing any requirements. If you are missing a requirement needed to graduate, your application may be denied until you have resolved the issue.

If your application is approved, we will send you an invitation to join the Canvas page where we post any relevant graduation information.

  • Students who participate in the commencement ceremony must be completing their remaining degree requirements in the same semester.

To view the Commencement Participation Policy in full, please visit the Commencement FAQs page.

  • Candidates may purchase regalia in-person at the University Bookstore or order online for delivery. For more information about custom Texas State regalia, including pricing, please visit the Cap and Gown page on the Commencement website.

  • Honors will be calculated using the following Texas State GPAs:

    • 3.4 - 3.59 will graduate cum laude
    • 3.6 - 3.79 will graduate magna cum laude
    • 3.8 - 4.0 will graduate summa cum laude

For the commencement program, honors status is calculated using the previous semester's GPA. This is because grades for student's final semester are not posted until after graduation. All students graduating with honors will receive the same honors cords at check-in.

Effective fall 2021, to be eligible for graduation with academic honors, a student seeking a baccalaureate degree must have completed at least 48 semester credit hours at Texas State preceding graduation. Calculation of the GPA to determine academic honors status is based on all Texas State work applied to the first baccalaureate degree, including work completed in the final semester. Students earning second baccalaureate degrees are eligible for graduation with academic honors if they complete 48 or more semester credit hours at Texas State, meeting the GPA criteria, in pursuit of a second degree.

For more information, visit the Academic Honors page in the Texas State catalog.
