Nursing Degree at Texas State

Texas State University-San Marcos does not currently offer a nursing degree.  However, there is a proposal in progress to establish a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the Round Rock Higher Education Center.  Upon approval, the first class of junior students is expected to be admitted in Fall 2010.

Although the program is still in the development phases, Texas State has established a list of courses that will be required for the first two years prior to admission to the School of Nursing.  These prerequisites may be found in the 2008-2010 undergraduate catalog.  Click on the following link, and then scroll down to the School of Nursing section.

Pre-Nursing

Texas State University-San Marcos does not currently offer a degree in nursing.  However, students may choose to complete prerequisite courses at Texas State for other nursing programs, then transfer when eligible.  Students interested in nursing are encouraged to determine which program they are interested in, and then meet with an academic advisor in the College of Health Professions Advising Center in order to determine their next steps.  Pre-nursing requires a cooperative effort among the student, advising center, and program to which the student is applying.  It is the student's responsibility to make sure courses taken at Texas State will transfer to meet the requirements at the nursing program chosen.

There are 72 accredited nursing programs in Texas which prepare students to become licensed registered nurses. Four types of programs are available: Associate’s Degree, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, and Master’s Degree. Pre-Physical Therapy

Texas State students interested in a career in Physical Therapy must first decide on a baccalaureate degree prior to pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy. When selecting your undergraduate degree, be sure to select one that you will be happy with in case you decide Physical Therapy is not right for you.

Pre-Physical Therapy students are encouraged to meet with an advisor in the College of Health Professions Advising Center once Physical Therapy is chosen as a possible career.  The Health Professions advisors will be helpful in explaining the requirements for admission to the Physical Therapy program and the admission process.  However, students will still be required to meet with the advisor for their undergraduate major in order to discuss semester scheduling, graduation requirements, and other issues related to the Bachelor's degree.
