Clinical laboratory science student, Maddy Gray, screening essential workers for coronavirus in her hometown

Madeline “Maddy” Gray, a junior in Texas State University’s clinical laboratory science program, has joined a team screening for coronavirus among “essential workers” reporting to work in a large wireless communications company.

Since March 30, she has worked to cautiously check temperatures of all incoming employees and follow screening protocols.

Between her work shifts, online classes and studying, we caught up with Madeline to ask about her experience serving on the frontlines of the pandemic as a College of Health Professions student.

CLS STUDENTS PARTICPATE ANNUALLY IN BOBCAT BUILD

Bobcat Build was started 12 years ago as a way to say “Thank You” to the San Marcos community.  It has now turned into a Texas State University tradition and serves as the largest service project on campus.  It is also the second largest, one-day community service project in the state of Texas.  The name itself symbolizes our goal of strengthening the bond between Texas State University and the community of San Marcos.  Every spring semester, students volunteer their time to complete various service projects throughout the community such as landscaping, painting, or clean-ups at residents’ homes, local schools, parks, churches, and neighborhoods. Over the past 10 years, the event has grown in participation from approximately 700 volunteers at 50 jobsites to nearly 3,500 volunteers at over 165 jobsites within the San Marcos community! CLS Students Participate in American Diabetes Association Expo

Student volunteers from the Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) program at Texas State University performed glucose testing at the American Diabetes Association Expo in San Antonio on May 18.
Texas State students Emily Brown, Kathleen Aguero, Michael McCauley, Diana Rayo, and Megan Taylor participated.  Texas State alum Lindsey Stewart also helped along with CLS faculty member Gerald Redwine who organized and supervised the event.
Capillary blood samples were collected and tested using the Infinity™ glucose testing meter.  The meters and reagents were donated by Philosys, Inc. New York, NY.  Patients received educational information about diabetes and their risk for developing diabetes.
