Minor in Healthcare Administration

Degree Sequence (18 Semester Hours)

The School of Health Administration is pleased to announce the availability of a minor in one of our most exciting fields of study and work; healthcare administration! For undergraduate students currently enrolled in another major, the undergraduate program in healthcare administration includes an opportunity to choose from a select group of courses, drawn from the Bachelor of Healthcare Administration curriculum. The healthcare administration (HA) minor is designed to complement such other majors with the objective of providing an introductory curriculum which can importantly assist a student with gaining employment in healthcare and healthcare related career fields.

This objective can be achieved with the HA minor by:

  • building on general studies foundations
  • offering scheduling flexibility for non-traditional students
  • introducing students to health services management functions through the mastery of certain skills including communication, decision-making, and coordination, unique to healthcare administration
  • preparing students for graduate study

A minor in healthcare administration requires eighteen (18) hours of study, including nine (9) hour core of required courses and nine (9) hours of electives chosen from a field of twenty-seven (27) hours:

Required Courses:

  • HA 3308 - Healthcare Organizations
  • HA 3324 - Healthcare Supervision
  • HA 4307 - Healthcare Law

Elective Courses:

  • HA 2310 - Ethics for the Health Professions
  • HA 2315 - Healthcare History, Culture and Language
  • HA 3329 - Healthcare Personnel
  • HA 3340 - Management of Health Information Systems
  • HA 3345 - Employment Law in Healthcare Management (HA 3329 prerequisite)
  • HA 3375 - Healthcare Accounting (Economics & Statistics prerequisite)
  • HA 4302 - Managed Care
  • HA 4305 - Healthcare Services Marketing
  • HA 4315 - Healthcare Problem-Solving

For additional information, please contact the Administrative Assistant in the office of the Department of Healthcare Administration, Room 253, Health Professions Building (HPB), or any HA department faculty!

Advising

Julie Carroll, the School Administrative Assistant, serves as your academic advisor answering all your questions regarding curriculum. Robert Mooney, Coordinator of Undergraduate Field Placements, is available to answer all your internship/residency questions.

Repeat Policy

All HA students must maintain a minimum major (HA) GPA of 2.25 with no grade below a "C". Students are allowed to repeat each HA course once, and only once, in order to improve their major (HA) GPA or their grade in a particular course. A student having repeated a course and still not achieving a minimum grade of "C", will not be allowed to continue as a health administration major, therefore, students needing to repeat courses are encouraged to seek assistance from the instructor or a chair-appointed mentor.

Comprehensive Exam

All healthcare administration majors are required to take a comprehensive exam during the final semester of coursework. Students will enroll in HA 4141 (comp prep course) during the final internship (4441) or prior to the residency (4848). You will take the comprehensive at the completion of HA 4141. Questions for the comprehensive exam will be taken from all the healthcare administration (HA) courses so students are encouraged to save all course material (textbooks, syllabi, class notes, etc.) to use in preparing for the exam.

Scheduling

When scheduling classes, pay close attention to the sequence/prerequisite sheet and the School course schedule. There are certain courses that are only offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. This information will be important in planning for internship and graduation.

Internship/Residency (see the School's bulletin boards for important deadlines)

All General education, other required courses, and junior year (HA) courses must be completed prior to enrolling in HA 4440 or 4441 (Internship). The internship courses should be taken your final tow semesters at Texas State. In addition, you must have a minimum grade of "C" in all major (HA) courses and a major (HA) GPA of 2.25. You are eligible to apply for internship during the last semester of your junior year.

Students do have the option of enrolling in a residency (HA 4848) provided that all coursework will be completed prior to the residency semester. The residency will require approximately 40 hours per week. The above minimum grade and GPA requirement must be met prior to enrolling in residency (HA 4848). This option (HA 4848) is not available during the Summer Session.

More information on internships and residencies can be found here or by clicking on "Internship Info" under Student Resources.
