Masters of Healthcare Administration (MHA)
The School of Health Administration at Texas State University-San Marcos is one of only a few universities in the nation with both an undergraduate program certified by the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and a graduate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). The school is proud to have offered both undergraduate and graduate programs in healthcare administration since 1974.
The healthcare administration program is designed to enhance the career mobility of part-time students currently employed in health professions as well as to provide a solid base of academic experiences for full-time students who wish to enter the healthcare administration profession. The primary focus of the curriculum is middle to senior-level management.
The program is offered to full-time students during the day and to part-time students during in the evenings. The school’s award-winning faculty bring rich experiential and educational backgrounds to the classroom.
Texas State’s master of healthcare administration (MHA) program has been accredited by CAHME since 1992. CAHME is the only organization to accredit master’s level healthcare management programs in the United States and Canada.
Through CAHME accreditation, students are assured that accredited healthcare management education programs are evaluated extensively and conform to set standards. Accreditation requires continual self-evaluation, regular reports and periodic external review. Because of this, students are assured that the educational quality of the programs remains current and reflects changes in knowledge and practice of the profession.
Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) The MHA program usually includes 43 hours of core courses and either a field experience of six to eight hours or six hours of thesis, depending on the student’s previous experience in health administration.
Principal areas of study include health and disease; sociological, economic, legal and political forces that affect health care; and management and organizational behavior including such specializations as financial management, human resource management, planning, marketing, and data generation and analysis.
A nine-hour cognate in health administration is available for students majoring in other disciplines. Required courses are Healthcare Organization and Delivery, Healthcare Law, and Healthcare Organizational Behavior/Theory.
Area of Emphasis
A 12-hour area of special emphasis in health administration is available to students pursuing MBAs. Required courses include Healthcare Organization and Delivery and three other healthcare administration courses selected from a list provided by the MBA advisor.
Minor in Healthcare Administration
A 15-hour minor in healthcare administration is available to students majoring in other disciplines. Required courses are Healthcare Organization and Delivery, Healthcare Law, and Healthcare Organizational Behavior/Theory. The remaining six hours are selected with the School of Health Administration (SOHA) graduate advisor according to the student’s area of interest and needs.
Course prerequisites for MHA students include: statistics, economics and financial accounting. These prerequisites may be accepted from other universities and must be taken prior to entering the graduate program.
Applicants must meet the Graduate College’s minimum GPA requirement of 2.75 for the last 60 hours of letter-grade course work leading to the bachelor’s degree as well as for any graduate or professional work. They must also earn a minimum score of 575 on an admission index calculated by multiplying GPA for the last 60 hours of undergraduate work by 100 then adding it to the applicant's new GRE score (verbal & quantitative).
To apply, each applicant must submit the following to The Graduate College at Texas State:
- An official Texas State Graduate College application form;
- A non-refundable application fee of $40.00 (check or money order payable to Texas State University in U.S. currency);
- Non-Texas State graduates must submit one official transcript from each senior level, post-secondary institution attended. These transcripts must be mailed directly from the institutions to the Office of the Graduate College;
- Official scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) verbal and quantitative portions combined (you must have your GRE scores on file prior to acceptance);
- Three letters of reference from professionals competent to assess the applicant's interest in pursuing a career in their chosen field of study*; and
- Applicant's written statement of purpose indicating ability and interest in completing the degree program*.

Once these materials are received, the School of Health Administration graduate advisor will schedule an interview to confirm the applicant's ability and interest in not only pursuing, but completing the program. Because of the writing and speaking requirements in the MHA program, applicants for the MHA program are required to complete an on-campus interview. For the interview, you are required to bring a current resumé.
