Prior to joining the faculty in 1984, Dr. Burke was an assistant administrator at St. Luke's Episcopal hospital in Houston, Texas Children's Hospital, and the Texas Heart Institute. Dr. Burke's teaching and research interests include organizational behavior and management, which earned him SWT School of Health Professions Teaching Excellence Awards in 1986, 1987, 1996, and 2000 and the Teacher of the Year Award in 1986. In 1999, he was awarded Southwest Texas State University’s highest award in teaching – The Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Burke is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, serving as President of the San Antonio Chapter in 1987, and has served on two local hospital boards.
