The Ties That Bind

The third edition of "The Ties That Bind" has been released and is available for purchase from the
Texas Long Term Care Institute. The heart of the book is the collection of nearly thirty oral histories or oral history vignettes of Central Texas. The stories are mostly about the elderly. They were all written by teenagers or young adults. This bringing of the generations together makes "The Ties That Bind" a laudable intergenerational experience.
This edition includes "How To" action steps that communities of people can take to create their own ties that bind the generations together.
The third edition also provides extensive research documentation on the valuable impact intergenerational experiences have on young and old alike. Seen in the larger picture of civic engagement and service-learning by young adults, a best practices model has emerged for potential replication by others. What seems like a good thing to do, bringing people together through intergenerational programs, has been validated by the research that has demonstrated tangible value to the generations affected and to the larger communities that they share.
