HIM 2360 Medical Terminology

Sue Biedermann, HIM Lecturer
The Health Information Management department offers three sections of medical terminology. Cathy Hess, Lecturer, teaches two sections. This class is offered to students that are majoring in one of the health professions, as well as, to anyone who might want to take it as an interesting elective.

Students are taught roots, suffixes and prefixes that lay a foundation for many medical terms and are introduced to diseases, procedures and abbreviations for each body system.

HIM 3301 Professional Practice & Relationships

Danette Myers, HIM Faculty
Exploration of the expanding role of the HIM professional. Emphasis will be on the organizational structure and delivery of healthcare in hospitals and other healthcare agencies and the associated roles of HIM professionals.

HIM 3310 Fundamentals of Health Information Management

Desla Mancilla, HIM Faculty
In this course, new HIM students demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access. Students are using these software programs in the computer lab in order to complete other assignments given throughout the remainder of the HIM program. Students are also learning about information system components including hardware, software, and networks. Once this foundation is established, students move on to concepts of database management, data analysis and data display and distinguish between information management and information technology.

HIM 3363 Introduction and Technical Aspects of Health Information Management

Desla Mancilla, HIM Faculty
This class serves as an introduction to the principles and procedures used in health information organization, maintenance, retention, numbering and filing systems. Lecture topics emphasize the functions and duties of the medical record to the health care delivery system. Students also participate in lab exercises to become familiar with medical record documentation by various disciplines that make up the health care team. In the second half of the semester, each student presents a HIM related topic to the class. Students are encouraged to develop their public speaking skills and familiarity with presentation software.

HIM 3367 Disease and Medical Science I

Jackie Moczygemba, HIM Faculty

In this class, students are introduced to the general concepts of the disease process. Some examples of lecture topics include: the inflammatory response, pathogenic microorganisms, neoplastic, congenital and hereditary diseases. In addition, students are given outside assignments to explore current events in health care, public disease data reporting and pharmaceutical research.

HIM 3390 HIM Departmental Management

A study of the principles involved in managing HIM departments in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. The course provides the opportunity to apply theory to traditional HIM managerial responsibilities and in the expanded role of the HIM professional.

HIM 4215 HIM Directed Experience4215

Supervised experienced in health information management technical procedures. Student will develop insight and understanding of the health care delivery system as related to health information management responsibilities and procedures.

HIM 4301 The Enterprise Electronic Health Record

4301 classIn the Enterprise EHR course, the second year HIM students are applying skills they have learned throughout the program to guide organizations through the implementation and selection of electronic health record systems. In addition, students are using the AHIMA Virtual Lab EHR system to "touch and feel" what an EHR system really is. In the Virtual lab, students have created data abstracts and become familiar with the structure of this EHR product. Students are also working in teams using a project management approach to complete simulated projects on EHR training plans, Master Patient Index mergers, creating automated record request systems, implementing an e-mail encryption program, and implementing an organization wide password management program.

HIM 4330 Interpretation and Analysis of Healthcare DataSue Biedermann, HIM Department Chair

Students have just completed a unit on conducting research. Student groups completed a modified research project using their classmates and other students as their research "subjects" with all groups presenting their findings to the class. For the remainder of the semester, the course will be devoted to the computation of healthcare statistics.

HIM 4363 Comparative Record SystemsLillian Polanco-Valdez, HIM Faculty

Theory and procedures for the maintenance and regulation of patient health information records in non-hospital medical care facilities to include long term care, ambulatory care, psychiatric care, rehabilitation and prison record keeping systems.

HIM 4364 Classification, Nomenclature, and Reimbursement

4364
Continued study of ICD-9-CM, CPT 4 and other classification and nomenclatures. The relationship with inpatient and ambulatory care reimbursement systems is also explored.

HIM 4370 Financial and Reimbursement Methodologies for HIMDesla Mancilla, HIM Faculty

This course addresses the reimbursement cycle from patient registration to claims and billing with an emphasis on federal regulations and the role of HIM regarding payment systems, accounting and budgeting principles and other financial management related activities. Case-mix management and the revenue cycle have been the focus of the first half of the course this fall.

HIM 5301 Enterprise EHR-Graduate Class

Desla Mancilla, HIM Faculty

This is the first semester for HIM to offer a graduate course in the revised degree
plan for the HSR Masters degree program. Electronic health records, regional health information organizations, and the national health information network are the building blocks of this course. Students evaluate issues related to integrating an organizational EHR with external entities to achieve the promise of improved patient safety. Legal, financial, patient care, information technology, health information management, reimbursement and other issues are addressed. Students present findings of individual research papers and also work in groups to become actively involved with the learning process.
