Welcome to the School of Nursing at Texas State University. This is truly an exciting time to be at Texas State and embarking on a career in health care. Our new nursing building will be ready for occupancy by fall 2010, in time to greet the first 100 junior-level nursing students. We have been very fortunate to recruit and hire competent, motivated and truly excited faculty to join us as we move forward in completion of the building and course design.
The nursing program has been approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, as well as the Texas Board of Nursing.
Nurses are in great demand throughout the nation. As the population ages and nurses retire, this number will only grow larger. Within the state of Texas by 2020, it is estimated that the number of new nurse graduates must increase by 25,000 in order to meet the growing demand for these skilled professionals. Texas State is committed to help fill the gap and is stepping up to put its mark on the future of health care in the state of Texas. We are devoting considerable time and resources to the new building and program.
The mission of our program is to prepare health care professionals to meet the needs of patient populations in the 21st century and beyond. While caring is a necessary component of the practice of nursing, it is not sufficient. Nurses must have a strong theoretical and scientific basis for the practice of nursing, thus the curriculum is grounded in science as well as the art of nursing. Our graduates will be prepared to promote, maintain and assist in restoring the health of diverse individuals of all ages and communities using evidence-based practice and client involvement.
Nursing is a dynamic profession and I have never found my experiences in nursing to be boring or mundane. I have had the unique opportunity to live in a variety of communities, meet wonderful individuals and experience life and death, all the while practicing in a profession that has brought so much comfort to the world. My message to you is that I hope you too can find a profession that not only offers you a means to make a living, but provides you with excitement, joy and comfort.
Please look through the pages of our website and as you do, why not consider a career in nursing?
