Respiratory Care Practitioners are important members of the health care team. The field of respiratory care includes exciting and challenging career opportunities in the fields of acute care, critical care, home care, extended care, pulmonary rehabilitation, diagnostic testing, polysomnography (sleep studies), research or education. Respiratory therapists have a well-defined scope of practice. They are considered specialists in the area of life support equipment and its applications. The Bachelor of Science Degree Program in Respiratory Care offers an intellectually stimulating and demanding educational experience.
The College of Health Professions offers the Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care (BSRC). The degree is designed for completion in four years. Admission to the program is restricted to the Fall semester of each year with a maximum class size of 40 students.
The Respiratory Care Program at Texas State is fully accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), qualifying graduates to take board exams given by the National Board for Respiratory Care. A certificate of completion is awarded at the end of the junior year to those students completing coursework for the advanced therapist level.
An accredited course of studies in polysomnography at the post-bac and undergraduate-level is also offered. This unique course is also available to qualified healthcare practitioners other than Respiratory Therapists as a “bridge” transition into polysomnography training. Upon completion of the 18-hour PSG Course of Studies, individuals are eligible to immediate sit for national PSG board exams without a having to complete a clinical internship.
