Serving as the only Level II Trauma Facility serving the Central Texas area, Brackenridge is an accredited Teaching Hospital affiliated with Austin Medical Education Programs and UTMB Galveston. The city-owned hospital is the oldest public hospital in Texas name for Dr. Robert Brackenridge, an outstanding physician of his time. Brackenridge Hospital is also home to the Neurosciences, Brain and Spine Center, a 24-hour ER staffed by board-certified ER physicians, multiple ICU units and an intermediate care unit, day surgery, inpatient surgery, diagnostic services, a Level II Neonatal ICU, extensive rehabilitation services and a heart and stroke care center. The Respiratory Care services department plays an integral role in providing Respiratory Care to the Brackenridge Children's Hospital, the NICU, adult ICUs and medical/general floor units.
