Scholarships, Awards, and Funds

The Andrae L. Turner Health Leadership Endowment was established by Mr. Turner, recognized in 2021 as a Young Alumni Rising Star of the University. He established this fund for student development activities at the discretion of the SOHA Director.

Megan Hamid Memorial Scholarship was established by an endowment created by Michael and Fran Hamid in memory of their daughter and our student Megan Hamid. Each year the award goes to a graduate student majoring in healthcare administration (MHA) who exemplifies the best in scholarship and civic engagement. Caitlin Duvall-Hammer Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018 by the parents of Caitlin to provide scholarships and financial assistance for graduate students in SOHA. Students must exhibit academic merit and leadership ability. Preference will be given for a student demonstrating an interest in complementary or alternative healthcare.

John B. Noone Award was established in honor of Mr. Noone who served as assistant professor in the School of Health Administration from 1976 to 1996.  Each year, this award goes to the outstanding undergraduate student majoring in healthcare administration (BHA).  The winner of this award is chosen from current BHA students by faculty vote based on academic achievement, leadership, civic engagement and contributions to the healthcare administration profession.

Bernard and Irma Rappaport Award was established in honor of Mr. Rappaport who served as professor and chair of Health Administration from 1974 to 1984.  Each year, this award goes to the outstanding graduate student majoring in healthcare administration (MHA).  The winner of this award is chosen from current MHA students by faculty vote based on academic achievement, leadership, civic engagement and contributions to the healthcare administration profession.

Dr. Joy Boone Quality Achievement Scholarship

This scholarship is made possible by retired Colonel Linnes Chester, 1986 graduate from the School of Health Administration, who credits adhering Dr. Joy Boone’s high expectations of quality to his successful business, academic, and military careers. Allen G. Herkimer, Jr. Outstanding HA Alumni Award

In 1998, Allen G. Herkimer, Jr., and his wife Fay P. Herkimer made a gift contribution to the Texas State University Development Foundation to establish this endowment. Professor Herkimer taught in the Department of Health Administration from 1986 until his retirement in 1996. An outspoken advocate for "real world" experience in the classroom, it is both proper and fitting for the Herkimer Fund to benefit any outstanding alumni from the School of Health Administration, at both graduate and undergraduate levels, who are practicing their professions in the "real world."

Mr. Darwin Eugene Winfield

Mr. Winfield was an Associate Professor in Allied Health Professions and the first Chair of the Department of Health Administration from 1976-1979. He earned a B.S., Louisiana State Polytechnic Institute and M.S., from Northwestern State University. Mr. Winfield served the Department from 1973 to 1990. To be considered for this award, undergraduate students must demonstrate financial need, be making progress toward earning their degree, and demonstrate intent to pursue a career in the Health Administration profession.

Charles and Linda Johnson Endowed Scholarship

This award honors Dr. Charles Johnson, the first Chair of the former Department of Health Services & Research, and his wife Linda. Dr. Johnson was known for being a visionary and pioneer in the introduction of computer applications into education for health professionals. The Johnson award winner is selected by the faculty and recognized a student who achieves both academically and professionally.


Scholarships and Awards offered by Professional Associations:

Albert W. Dent Scholarships offered by the American College of Healthcare Executives This scholarship is offered to provide financial aid to minority students in healthcare management graduate programs to help offset tuition costs, student loans and expenses. Offered annually, the Albert W. Dent Graduate Student Scholarship is designated for minority students enrolled in their final year of a healthcare management graduate program. For more information or to apply, please visit the scholarship provider's website. Entry deadline is March 31 and more information is available at ache.org/students.

Foster G. McGaw Graduate Student Scholarships provides financial support to undergraduate and graduate students in health administration. Scholarship funds are awarded each year to all AUPHA full graduate and undergraduate programs. The faculty within these programs disperse these monies at their discretion to students most deserving of recognition.

David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarships The David A. Winston Health Policy Scholarships identifies and supports promising young people committed to health policy. The scholarship program recognizes student excellence and achievement based upon that student’s record and recommendations from faculty and colleagues. For 2023 up to twenty awards of $10,000 will be offered to each student that demonstrates their potential to succeed in health policy, health administration, and/or health management at either the state or national level upon graduation from their master’s degree program. The scholarship is open to any student in a member program of the AUPHA & ASPPH.
